Tarragona from Salou: Amphitheatre, Cathedral and Old Town
Updated October 24, 2026 · 4 min read
The short answer
Tarragona deserves at least half a day from Salou; make it a full day if you want to see the cathedral inside and visit the amphitheatre. The linked offer is a cathedral entry ticket from €12.50, not a tour: travel from Salou, a guide and the amphitheatre are not included. Published RT2 services take about 13 minutes from Salou-PortAventura; check the timetable for your day.
What you are actually booking
The ticket covers Tarragona Cathedral on Pla de la Seu. According to the booking page it gives access to all the cathedral’s rooms, including the Chapel of Saint Thecla, an 18th-century mausoleum. Instead of a guide there is an audio guide on your smartphone (QR code; English, Catalan, Spanish, French). Headphones are required: bring your own or buy them at the ticket office for €1. The ticket lets you leave and re-enter the cathedral on the day of your visit.

The detail to check
The cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the site of a Roman temple; its main façade was left unfinished and combines Gothic and Romanesque. In the review breakdown the “Guide” sub-score is only 2.4 out of 5, against 4.4 overall. So do not expect an explanation equal to a guided visit. The Roman amphitheatre by the sea is not part of this ticket; it dates from the second century and later held a Visigothic basilica and a Romanesque church. Clarify access, opening times and price for it separately.
Who should choose it
Going on your own gives you control over lunch and museum time. If you would rather have a guided walk through Roman Tarraco, the category lists guided walks. Wear shoes for stone paving and slopes between the amphitheatre and Part Alta. The booking page carries the label “Wheelchair accessible”; with limited mobility, have step-free access confirmed at each monument, because an old-town route is not fully accessible just because one site describes itself that way.
Our recommendation
Buy the cathedral ticket if you want to explore Tarragona on your own and skip the ticket line for the cathedral. Plan the amphitheatre and old town separately, and choose a guided Roman tour if history matters more to you than an audio guide. Before paying, compare date and cancellation terms; these details can change.
